We know you haven’t thought of this before and we know you are a little bit ashamed of it. It’s okay. We think it’s a great idea too. Who says a donut has to be for breakfast? Who says a donut has to be fried? Certainly not us. Grill ‘em. You know you want to. You know your wife wants you too, even though she says she doesn’t.
There are a number of grilled donuts recipes out there. Some of them are as simple as buying a donut and putting it on the grill until the glaze out the outside starts to caramelize and the inside becomes a delicious gooey mess. Make sure you follow the rules for getting perfect sear-marks.
Some of the grilled donuts recipes call for ice cream. Grilled donuts and ice cream, that sounds as American as…grilled donuts and ice cream.
Here is one we found on CDkitchen.com, titled “Al Roker’s Grilled Glazed Donuts”. It calls for eight donuts, that’s a lot, but we think you can adjust according to the size of your household.
Ingredients
8 glazed doughnuts (or sugared, according to our picture this works just fine). Note that grilling donuts is great for day-old donuts that are a just a tad bit stale.
1 pint vanilla ice cream, softened enough to scoop.
Directions
Heat your grill to high.
Slice doughnuts in half horizontally and grill them, cut-side down for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until toasted.
Place half of your doughnut grilled-side up on a dessert plate and then top it with a small scoop ice cream. You can serve them open-faced this way and eat them with or fork (in this case the recipe serves 16 and you will need more ice cream) or you can can make a grilled donut ice cream sandwich.
Simply put the other half doughnut on top of the ice cream. Serve at once. Make sure you have plenty of napkins.
